Great Virginia Wineries

With over 200 wineries, Virginia is one of the top 5 wine producing states in the US. Most people only think of California for US wine, but Virginia climate and soil make for delicious wines and beautiful vineyards amid the Blue Ridge Mountains. 200 wineries are a lot to choose from, but here are some that are on my list from Williamsburg Winery to Valhalla Vineyards in Roanoke, these offer delicious wines with stunning views in historic settings.

      Williamsburg Winery is a fantastic winery located in Virginia's first capital city. Featuring a hotel and the Gabriel Archer Tavern on the property, this would be a wonderful place to spend a weekend getaway! Be sure to admire the two stone fireplaces at either end of the large ballroom before heading into the wine cellar. They were deconstructed and brought here for the winery from an old mansion in France.

      Another vineyard with a cozy tasting room, visit Hamlet Vineyard and relax on the tasting terrace, or bring your own camp chairs and blankets to lounge around the grounds.

      A part of historic Shirley Plantation, Shirley Vineyards sits right on the James River. Make a reservation or order one of their picnic style lunches to enjoy out on the grounds.

      This Virginia Winery actually began as an apple orchard making cider until they moved to their New Kent location and began planting vines. The site of the current tasting room used to be "Franks Tavern" where travelers could rest on their journeys from the then capital of Williamsburg. It is reported that George Washington and Rochambeau even made stops here!

      A more urban retreat, Mermaid Winery has two locations, one in Virginia Beach and their main location in Norfolk, VA. Reserve a table at either of these locations and prepare to explore the mythical world of mermaids and sirens.

      One of the many wineries in Central Virginia, Barboursville Vineyards offers tours and tastings in a beautiful 18th century estate house. A warm and cozy place to spend the afternoon, make a reservation to tour the old house and sip wine in the 1821 library.

      Flying Fox Vineyard owns two separate estates, one in central Virginia and one in the Shenandoah Valley to take advantage of the different climates for growing grapes. A smaller family owned vineyard, visit Flying Fox to taste some of their award winning local wines.

      On the site of one of the earliest vineyards in the country, Jefferson Vineyards has a rich winemaking history. Just south of Thomas Jefferson's Monticello, the Woodward family has three vineyard locations on property with one of them situated on the oldest vineyard site in the country.

      Wine and horses make a great pairing at this Albemarle County winery. Originally purchased as a horse farm back in the 70's the family did not start planting vines until 2003. Now this family owned and operated Virginia winery produces delicious estate wines that you can experience in their beautiful tasting room.

      Built on top of a small mountain in Roanoke, VA, Valhalla Vineyards offers tastings with 360 views of the surrounding area. Enjoy a lunch and tasting on their covered deck and take a tour to explore their underground wine cave!

      Gray Ghost Winery has one of the largest volunteer harvest programs in Virginia! Stop in for a wine tasting or make a reservation for the vineyard tour. You can also pack a lunch and bring the family (fido included) for an afternoon on the vineyard grounds. If you want to try something new, sign up to help with the grape harvest every September and October, but plan ahead because it books up quickly!

      One of Virginia's oldest wineries, nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains, this is a great place to enjoy and afternoon wine tasting and beautiful scenery that Virginia has to offer. Grab a charcuterie plate and a bottle of wine and take a self guided tour through the vineyard!

      A family owned and operated vineyard in northern Virginia, Old House Vineyard began as an alfalfa hay farm and was transformed on a whim with a few grape vines to see what would happen. Still family run today, this Virginia Winery has been expanded to brewing beer and distilling spirits in addition to wines.

      An hour outside of Washington DC you'll find this beautiful Northern Virginia Winery. At Stone Tower Winery, you can take a self guided tour of the vineyard with a glass of wine in hand, or you can sign up for a cellar tour and learn about the journey of their wines from grape to glass!
