Albuquerque

City in New Mexico known for its International Balloon Fiesta, located along Route 66, with a blend of Native American and Spanish cultures.

Tips from the community

Celebrations look a little different in Albuquerque for this year’s Cinco de Mayo, but there are still super fun ways to celebrate! Take a trip to the National Hispanic Cultural Center or the South Broadway Cultural Center to learn about Mexican heritage in New Mexico and experience live dance and entertainment. The beginning of May kicks off historic Old Town’s “Summertime in Old Town” concert series. This year, you can also take part virtually in the 36th Annual Run for the Zoo. They have race options from one mile all the way up to full marathon if you’re feeling ambitious. For a completely different way to celebrate, get tickets to the Albuquerque Isotopes opening game on May 6th.

For half a century, balloonists have soared above the skies in Albuquerque. The state’s largest city is an ideal place to host the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta thanks to the “Albuquerque Box,” a combination of weather patterns and geographic landscape that allows for balloonists to take off and land in the same place. This year’s festival on October 1-9, 2022 will feature more than 500 hot air and gas-filled balloons, making it the largest ballooning event in the world. Spectators can walk among the balloons, talk with pilots, and see the balloons take flight. This is one of the best things to in New Mexico, folks.

I'm headed to New Mexico in December and am planning a totally solo, COVID-safe getaway with my pup Fiona. We snagged a casita between Santa Fe & Taos and plan to hit all the best hikes within reach. Food stops are for take-out only, national parks will be visited on off-days, and museums will have to be saved for the next trip (RIP Meow Wolf).

  • The Best Cinco de Mayo Celebrations

    seeker (Seeker Editors)
Cinco de Mayo marks the historic win of the Mexican army against the French way back in 1862, and the party hasn't stopped since. Pitchers of refreshing beverages underneath sunny skies, endless plates of fresh tacos and tortilla chips, mariachi bands, and we're just getting started. While Cinco de Mayo is an important holiday in Mexico, the parties in the US are some of the flashiest across the globe. Enjoy vibrant Mexican culture which is an integral piece of the fabric of the United States. Dance the day away in top US destinations such as San Antonio or Los Angeles, or experience a more historical perspective at the birthplace of the holiday in Pueblo, Mexico. Here are some of our favorite spots to hit during early May to enjoy mouthwatering food, and amazing parties that last the whole week.
