Glacier National Park

A pristine wilderness in Montana, known for its rugged peaks, clear lakes, abundant wildlife, and the iconic Going-to-the-Sun Road.

Tips from the community

The Glacier National Park is a window onto what America was before the railways and metropolises. A whole land of peaks and troughs carved by the ancient movements of massive ice fields, it’s sculpted into jagged summits and echoing ravines. Grizzly bears and lynxes roam within. Hiking trails pierce high-alpine plateau. It’s the sort of place you can feel totally alone and immersed in nature. One noteworthy human touch is the amazing Glacier Park Lodge, with its rustic interior hall made from Douglas-fir trunks.

Glacier National Park offers two chances to admire fall foliage: in mid- to late September in the western side of the park at lower elevations when the cottonwood and aspen trees turn golden and in mid-October in the mountains on the western side of the park where the tamarack, a deciduous conifer, turn to gold.  Peak Foliage in Glacier National Park: Mid-September

Over 700 miles of marked routes await in this largely untrodden corner of the Rockies: Glacier National Park. Lots of visitors stick to scenic byways like the amazing Going-to-the-Sun Road, which leaves routes like the legendary Highline Trail (not for the faint-hearted) pretty empty.
